A good paragraph and a formal email

Start with a key sentence, keep a clear order, and pick the right greeting and sign-off. That is how you write a paragraph that is easy to follow and an email that people take seriously.

Year 6 of primary, 1st and 2nd stage of secondary school11 to 16 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a Dutch teacher.

Why

You need to email your teacher to say you are ill. Do you start with Hey or with Beste mevrouw Peeters? And what do you put in the subject line?

An email to school is not a message to a friend. If you write a clear, polite email, you get a good answer sooner.

The same goes for a paragraph in an essay or a report. A good structure means your reader knows straight away what it is about.
