Understanding texts with signal words

Small words like want, maar, daarom and bovendien show how sentences hang together. Spot them and you understand a text faster, and your own writing gets better too.

Year 6 of primary, 1st and 2nd stage of secondary school11 to 16 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a Dutch teacher.

Why

Het regende. … gingen we wandelen. Do you fill in daarom or toch? And what does that change about the story?

With daarom (so, therefore) you went for a walk because it was raining: odd, but maybe you like rain. With toch (still, anyway) you went for a walk even though it was raining. One little word changes how the two sentences fit together.

Words like these are called signal words (signaalwoorden). They are the signposts of a text. In a reading task or a reading comprehension test, they help you find your way.
