Standard Dutch and in-between Dutch
With friends you might say ge and gij, in an email to school je and u. Flemish in-between Dutch is not wrong, but it does not fit everywhere, so you learn to choose the language that suits the moment.
Why
To your friend you say: Komde gij seffens mee? In an email to the head teacher you would not write that. Why not, actually?
At home, in the playground and in your messages you often speak tussentaal (in-between Dutch): a warm mix of your local dialect and standard Dutch. That is perfectly fine. It is how you sound like yourself.
But not everyone understands every kind of in-between Dutch equally well, and some situations call for more distance. That is why you also learn standaardtaal (standard Dutch): the Dutch that everyone understands, from Bruges to Groningen.
