Parts of speech

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, prepositions: every word in a sentence has its own job. A few simple questions help you tell them apart.

Years 5-6 of primary and 1st stage of secondary school10 to 13 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a Dutch teacher.

Why

In De kleine hond blaft naar de postbode every word does something different. Which word tells you what is happening, and which word says what the dog is like?

Words are like players in a team: each one has a job. The verb blaft says what is happening. The adjective kleine says what the dog is like.

If you know the parts of speech (woordsoorten), you understand the spelling rules better. The rule about the t is about verbs, the one about the extra e is about adjectives.
