Joined or separate
Dutch writes compound words as one word, like pannenkoek and voetbalveld, sometimes with an extra n or s in the middle. A few word groups, such as te veel, stay separate.
Why
The menu says pannen koek and the board in the sports hall says voetbal veld. Is that right?
No. Two words that together make one new word are written as one: pannenkoek, voetbalveld. With a space they look like two separate things.
The harder part is what goes between the two parts. If you hear an e, you sometimes write -en- and sometimes -e-. If you hear an s, you write it.
