Spelling

The plural

Is it bomen or boomen, auto's or autos? A Dutch plural ends in -en or -s, and the spelling sometimes shifts. Splitting the word into sound groups shows you how to write it.

Why

One boom, two bomen. One bal, two ballen. Why does one word lose an o while the other gains an extra l?

The plural itself is usually easy: you add -en or -s. But that new syllable sometimes changes the spelling of the word.

If you split the word into sound groups, you see why: bo-men and bal-len. A long sound at the end of a sound group is written with one letter. A short sound stays short with a double consonant.
