Proverbs and expressions

In a Dutch saying like de kat uit de boom kijken, the words say one thing and the meaning is something else entirely. Learn to read these sayings the way they are meant.

Why

Your mum says: We kijken de kat uit de boom. There is no cat and no tree. What does she mean?

She means: we will wait and see how things turn out first. That is an expression. You have to understand it figuratively: the words say something different from what you mean.

Proverbs and expressions make a language colourful. If you know them, you understand jokes, headlines and stories much better.
