The adjective and the e

Why is it een groot huis but het grote huis? Learn when a Dutch adjective takes an extra e, and how that e can change the spelling.

Year 6 of primary and 1st stage of secondary school11 to 15 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a Dutch teacher.

Why

Why do you say een groot huis but een grote tafel? In both cases it is about something big.

The difference is not in the size, but in the word that follows. Huis is a het word, tafel is a de word. And with a het word after een, the e disappears.

For anyone learning Dutch as a second language, this is a classic trap. One short rule helps almost every time.
